I was running a bit behind this week but finally found a spare half and hour to go through the wikis activites. I was first introduced to wikis quite recently, in this job and have had various training sessions on it so was quite confident that this was just some revision in the area. Unfortunately as Karen pointed out i think a lot of our group are maybe on holiday or have not had the time to do the activities yet so there is not much of a discussion going on yet. Having seen it applied in a work environment i can already see the scope for application and how user friendly it is, and i think even without training it is quite easy to work out.

It was nice this week to see how some of the technologies we had touched upon already started to seem more relevant with this weeks activites. I had utilised pretty much all the suggested sites at some point, having had an ipod for years, visited you tube and sought out the free music streaming websites. However it was nice to spend an hour looking around the sites more thoroughly and seeing what else they have to offer.

I listened to a few podcasts, but i have to say this technology has never really interested me and i found it hard to find anything that i wanted to listen to via a search engine, although i will continue to look just in case!!

So the choice this week was between Facebook and Twitter… as a regular  Facebook user i thought i’d give the Twittering a go!! I was utterly convinced that this new phenomena would not grab my attention at all, i mean how much can you say in 140 characters!! The next time i looked at the clock 45 minutes had passed and i had read with Big Brother type fascination about the mundane activities of at least 20 peoples lives and become a follower of 20 more.  Whilst I wasn’t brave enough to throw caution to the wind and twitter myself , (still not quite believing that anyone would really care), i can see the addicitve quality. I have spent years training myself to not become addicted to BB type programmes and feel that i should probably stay away from this one for the same reason..

This week I felt confident that i was ahead of the game when i read the topic..social bookmarking surely involved some kind of facebook esq websites… but was surprised to find yet another technology that I had no idea existed!! 

Again like the last few times i read the notes and wondered why i would ever use this technology but was pleasantly surprised to discover that the bookmarking tool del.icio.us has functions above and beyond my overused favourties list… I will defintely use this one again..

Ok so the pet was a tiger….. so i guess it is from the cat family!!

I had no idea what RSS was when i started this week and personalised homepages is not something i have ever really thought about. I must admit that whilst the idea of RSS is probably really useful to some people personally i don’t think that i will be utilising it on a regular basis. I am glad i found out what it is and how it works but at the moment I have no real use for it as i don’t really check any websites/blogs regularly. I only tried the google one as i gather from a few people that did the course last year that this is the easier of the two suggested. I found it really easy to set up and  use.

I had a lot of fun personalising my google homepage and moving things around, it took me a while to decide on which virtual pet to have but i think i made the right choice in the end!!

After using MSN messenger for the first time in 10 years I felt like i had technologically regressed!! It seemed to take longer and was more confusing than the first time round. After about 2 minutes the novelty had worn off and i remembered why i stopped using messenger the first time round. I’m sure i am not using it to it’s full potential but it seems a bit pointless to me as email and text messaging seem to be  more convenient and in most cases nearly as quick.

I am a first time blogger and admit i am a bit apprehensive, not being entirely sure if i will ever use it for anything other than this course again. But I may end up loving it..
